5.1 million mold species

With this many mold species, there are fungi that do many different things.

  • Did you know one species eats plastic? That was published a few years ago and some say that can be the answer to the tremendous amount of plastics in the oceans.
  • Did you know one mold species lives off radiation? Can this mold be used to remove radiation from contaminated areas of land? I’m sure the government has thought about it.
  • There is at least one species that will eat the wood of your home, a little like termites without the actual bugs.
  • One mold type called Aspergillus can cause a serious lung disease known as Aspergillosis.

These are just a very few examples of the extreme variety of mold.  With so many species it is time-consuming to catalog and study each one to know what they do good or bad.  It is no wonder people can get sick and even die from mold exposure. Yet many people dismiss mold as a minor thing, yet it can be deadly serious. So stay informed about mold, which also means microorganisms under California law, which includes dangerous bacteria that can affect a person in just a few hours after exposure, and know what steps to take when you suspect it in your home.
